It’s been a minute since I’ve been surprised. Well, by music anyways. When a new song comes my way, I try not to read the words that came attached to it because I want to experience the music blind. Usually, the photo is an indicator of what to expect, so I thought Trousdale was going to deliver some 2000s-inspired pop, very Y2K, Britneyesque. Instead, “Growing Pains” gave me a packed house on a Friday night in the heart of Nashville with a side of soul and a whopping dose of charisma.
Trousdale isn’t a trio that’d be on tour with Charli XCX, but would likely tear it up with Maren Morris or Kacey Musgraves because these three serve up the lovely marriage between country and pop, but with a bit more. If there is an era of country I appreciate with every molecule in my body, it’s ‘90s country. The vocals, the storytelling, and the music felt right for mainstream radio and the rodeo. Trousdale is just that with moments really feeling like early Shania and Brooks & Dunn. I do wonder if any of them grew up in church because they really have the type of vocal range that comes with hours of choir practice.
Alas, “Growing Pains” is a song that has the type of energy that makes it impossible to ignore, and don’t even try to sit still during it for it’s one that evokes movement in the body. Those who like their country with a bit of pop will enjoy everything Trousdale has going on. So check out the latest single now, and Growing Pains, their sophomore album, out everywhere on April 11th.
