Breaking the Rules with Saint Spicer

There is no such thing as a signature style when it comes to Saint Spicer because limits are not part of what she’s all about. A myriad of influences from Beyonce to Anna Delvey to Dave Chappelle, her sound is the manifestation of eclectic rebellion. We talked about all of the above and then some including her plans for new music as we roll into 2025.

Kendra: You’ve been dropping music for a handful of years, but was this always the path you were on or were you on a detour before releasing “On Repeat” back in 2019?

Saint Spicer: My life and art are a testament to NOT following “the rules.” I spent the first half of my life following the rules, and it led me to Stanford University in 2017 when I graduated two years before putting out “On Repeat.” I had a breakdown shortly after the release of that song and that is when the “detour” occurred. I would no longer be following the “school –> job –> marriage –> family” pipeline that was set out for me. I create my own path. I do my own genres. I live how I want.

Kendra: Listening through your music, you definitely have a cornucopia style. I can hear your Texan roots in “Dynamite” but you also aren’t afraid to get funky on some of your newer tracks. Do you feel that more and more artists today are doing away with strict genre lines because perhaps it’s more exciting to create with no boundaries?

Saint Spicer: Art imitates life! It is so important to be messy as an artist. Our society wants us packaged up and bottled in a fancy jar with a label so it’s easy to consume. When has life ever been that easy for you? What you’re picking up on is the earliest stages of the artistic process – where you are throwing things on the wall and seeing what sticks. Every time I release a song in a new genre, I am looking to see what sticks in the brain, what works best, and what the people crave. It’s all me, just different from sonic perspectives.

Kendra: Let’s talk about “Money.” Inspired after watching ‘Inventing Anna,’ you wrote this as Anna Delvey’s sort of theme song, an intro for her life in New York City. First off, what does one have to do to get her to dance to this on ‘Dancing with the Stars,’ in which she is a contestant this season?

Saint Spicer: To dance to my song “Money,” Anna Delvey would have to wear some cowboy boots. Not sure she can take off her ankle monitor long enough to put them on though…

Kendra: Secondly, what about Anna’s story stood out so much that you felt moved to pen an entire song?

Saint Spicer: Anna is the epitome of not following the rules. She created her own rules, and never questioned her worth, even when others did. I wanted to capture the emotion of a woman like her landing in NYC for the first time. Boots on the ground, stars in her eyes, dazzled by the shimmer and shine and just plugging herself into the lifestyle without all the self-doubt we’re so often riddled with whenever we start something new.

Kendra: Also inspiring you are artists like Beyonce and Lady Gaga. Which, of course. Both of them are insane talents who push the bar to sometimes, unreachable heights. However, you’re also moved by Dave Chappelle, which makes sense as he’s a performer too, but how do you feel his comedy has interlaced itself into your artistry?

Saint Spicer: I love people who tell the truth, especially from new angles. While Dave’s most recent work hasn’t been as poignant to me, his earlier works cut to the core of issues without hiding behind polite society B.S.— A lot of my inspirations (like Nina Simone) do that- they say the quiet part out loud. I intend to do the same.

Kendra: You’ve dropped a couple of singles in the past year, but what’s the word on an EP or maybe even an LP as we approach the new year?

Saint Spicer: I have an EP coming out in January. I’ve been developing a comic book series “Story of the Space Cowgirl” for the past few months intending for it to go along with it, but I’m realizing it’s a lot of work to develop a quality story. So I’ve scrapped the idea and will be releasing “Welcome to the Space Ranch” in January.

Kendra: Lastly, I love a good mixtape and wanted your help making one! So with your help, I’d love it if you could recommend 5 songs for a Space Cowgirl Mixtape?

Saint Spicer:
Saint Spicer “Dynamite”
Bree Runway “All Night”
Rihanna “Desperado”
Vic Mensa “Codeine Crazy (Icarus Story)”
Kanye West “Jail”
