In dating, honesty is the best policy. This is why so many relationships never quite get off the ground. They meander in the dirt as texts are exchanged, plans are made, but nothing more than a few encounters occur. You have to be truthful not only with the person you’re interested in but with yourself as well. The latter is what a lot of people tend to overlook. Not Frances Darling though, and in an ironic twist it’s her “Flight Risk” that makes her latest single a candid moment in romance.
Frances Darling’s “Flight Risk” opens with clear-cut imagery. Cherry trees and their unmistakable blossoms, but soon enough this singer-songwriter’s direct approach takes hold as she testifies in tune, “trouble it follows where I go.” The narrative continues as Darling places herself in the hot seat as someone who is a bit much, but has seemingly found her match in the object of her affection with the simple, “Turns out you’re a flight risk too.” So in this case, do two wrongs make a right, or is this a case of two people evolving, recognizing their truths, and eventually growing together? Perhaps a part two will follow as “Flight Risk” is only Frances Darling’s second single, following “All Talk,” which dropped in May 2024.
Lyrically the lines give a poetic take on a straightforward narrative. At the same time, Darling’s vocals are reminiscent of the wave of artists that came about in the ‘90s and into the early ‘00s like Shawn Colvin and Anna Nalick. Singer-songwriters who run towards their music heart first, but always leave room for a melodic moment. So those into music that leans that direction, who appreciate sincerity in song will want to check out “Flight Risk” by Frances Darling, out on all major music and streaming sites on September 27th.
